Special Education Services and Supports

The Georgia Department of Education’s Special Education Services and Supports division provides statewide guidance, resources, training, and oversight related to special education for students with disabilities. Resources cover Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), evaluations and reevaluations, parental rights, due process and dispute resolution, transition planning, special education law, instructional supports, data and reporting, and family engagement. GaDOE also supports local school districts in implementing special education services and IDEA requirements. GaDOE has continued to state that Georgia districts, schools, parents, and families will have access to special education services and supports.

StatewideGaDOE provides statewide special education guidance and oversight. Direct special education services are generally delivered through local school districts and schools, so families should also contact their local school system for student-specific services.

Eligibility Requirements

Resources are available to Georgia families, students, educators, school leaders, and professionals seeking information about special education services and requirements. Eligibility for a student to receive special education and related services is determined through the evaluation and eligibility process conducted by the student’s local education agency/school district.

Preschool (3-5), Elementary (6-10), Middle School (11-13), High School (14-18), Transition Age / Young Adult (16-26)

GaDOE special education guidance primarily applies to students ages 3 through the end of their eligibility for public-school special education services. Transition planning begins during the secondary-school years. The T.I.L.E. Transition Age / Young Adult category is broader than the actual age limit for school-based special education eligibility.
